For years I have noticed that my sleepy little Connecticut town lacks life. There is just not much going on here. 56 square miles is home to 9000 people who you don’t see too much. It is about as safe a town as you will find in Connecticut or the US. It is also picturesque with lots of trees, nature, winding hilly roads and lots of historic houses…or… old houses. The pretty house above, I have passed hundreds of times over the last 22years. It has been vacant and unused for 15 years. What a waste you say? How does this work you ask? It is owned by a non-profit organization(www.ctlandmarks.org/properties/palmer-warner-house/) who says their mission is “ to use their properties to inspire an understanding of our complex past” Really? When you go to their website and click on the “about” button, you will read a fluffy, lofty bunch of junk that tell you clearly that this NGO is yet another liberal, social-justice Democrat hive. Don’t get me wrong, I adore antiques, the efforts of my forefathers building these things; history is my favorite subject. There need to be museums where this past can be learned about, looked upon and felt. But.. this house is virtually never shown to anybody! Nobody benefits from this house being set aside as a “museum of history” and it going unused and unloved. I’ll bet even the ghosts are lonely. Built in 1738, it is quite nice, but to me it is just another old house in this town that is full of them. It was made special inside by the earliest families who built it who were blacksmiths of high craft. And then there are the 47 acres of pasture, grass and trees behind the house..Really spectacular. When I think of how that property could be used by South Africans who really need housing and would bring it to life, my blood boils a little. People in my town have made complaints about neglect to the property and also that it is never open to the public. A couple of years ago, the barn was going to collapse and letters to the newspaper started getting printed, then the non-profit was investigated for the neglect and for their money management. The barn was nicely rebuilt and it returned to sitting with no visitors. This ctlandmarks also own another “museum house” near me- also sitting locked up and empty for many years. My remedy for this situation is this- this company is providing no benefit to the public with these two properties in my town. They should sell them on the open market or lose their tax-exempt status. They should not be allowed to sit on such valuable properties while paying no property tax to the town if these houses serve no purpose for 15-20 years. This is the arrogance of the liberal rich showing it’s smirking face. Imagine being a rich old man and saying to someone- I am not famous, or a war hero or a founding father of this country but…my beautiful house full of antiques must be set aside as a museum to me! And that is what this house situation boils down to. Well, that is a self importance I cannot imagine, a severe lack of knowing that we are all just a rung on a cosmic ladder. People need houses and I think houses need people too… More houses to come…
